The movie has all the ingredients to make a great bio movie, but the execution prevents it from rising to what it could've been.Stella Maeve is one of the most popular models in world. The filmmaker's transport you back to the late 70s with their dedication to the style, from the clothes to the music and the fads. It's loaded with music from the Runaways and Joan's later solo run. You can't have a music film without the music that inspired it and the soundtrack to the film is awesome. Fowley is apparently infamous for his aggressive style, and his training sessions with the Runaways are the best parts of the film. Shannon is the group's manager Kim Fowley. She provides an innocence in Cherie's character at the start that makes the film interesting to watch when her stardom warps and destroys it. Dakota Fanning is Cherie and I've always thought of Fanning as one of the most talented young stars in Hollywood. I was concerned that a girl famous for her role in the TWILIGHT saga would ruin such an iconic role (Joan Jett) but she did a fantastic job and seemed to embody her perfectly. Kristen Stewart has earned some major credibility with me thanks to this film. Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, and Michael Shannon did an amazing job. It begins around the time Cherie begins to lose control which is a shame I should be concerned for her character, not bored by the meandering storyline. As a result, the movie loses it's momentum after their first major gig and drags through the last half. It felt as if the filmmakers had just strung along random interesting events in the Runaways history and it made it feel like the movie was just wandering along. My main problem with the film was that it came across as unstructured. It's fine though because the performances are strong enough that it's easy to forget that the material's nothing new. It's nothing we haven't seen before in other films, it's just happening to younger characters. Cherie's decline into addiction, the in-band conflicts, the initial excitement of success and the eventual succumbing to the stress and strain of maintaining the lifestyle. So we get a lot of repetition with each rock star film and RUNAWAYS is no different. The problem with music biopics, particularly for rock stars, is that most rock stars seem to encounter the same problems: sex, drugs, booze, addiction, conflicting personalities, etc. The cast did an amazing job in their roles but the film wasn't as great as it probably could have been. ![]() I had heard some good things about the film when it was first making the festival circuit, but I wasn't as impressed when I finally got a chance to see it myself. The film is based on "Neon Angel", the autobiography of the band's original lead singer Cherie Currie, and it gives us a glimpse into the world of rock and roll as seen from the perspective of a group of teenage girls on their way to super-stardom. THE RUNAWAYS chronicles the run of one of the most successful all-girl rock bands of all time. The Sonos app features full sound controls and configuration. When rotated forward, the height speakers are repurposed to deliver music with breathtaking power and dynamics. The sound quality is genuinely more vibrant than the soundbar’s size, yet to achieve the best results we found that the soundbar needs to sit upright, which is also the recommendation from Sonos. ![]() ![]() The mobilisation, the first since the Soviet Union battled Nazi Germany in World War Two, begins immediately. Speaking shortly after Putin, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Russia would draft some 300,000 additional personnel out of some 25 million potential fighters at Moscow's disposal. Putin signed a decree on partially mobilising Russia's reserves, arguing that Russian soldiers were effectively facing the full force of the "collective West" which has been supplying Kyiv's forces with advanced weapons, training and intelligence. Putin's war in Ukraine has killed tens of thousands, unleashed an inflationary wave through the global economy and triggered the worst confrontation with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when many feared nuclear war imminent. In essence, Putin is betting that by increasing the risk of a direct confrontation between the U.S.-led NATO military alliance and Russia - a step towards World War Three - the West will blink over its support for Ukraine, something it has shown no sign of doing so far. The address, which followed a critical Russian battlefield defeat in northeastern Ukraine, fuelled speculation about the course of the war, the 69-year-old Kremlin chief's own future, and showed Putin was doubling down on what he calls his "special military operation" in Ukraine. And those who try to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the weathervane can turn and point towards them." "In its aggressive anti-Russian policy, the West has crossed every line," Putin said. ![]() "If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will without doubt use all available means to protect Russia and our people - this is not a bluff," Putin said in a televised address to the nation.Ĭiting NATO expansion towards Russia's borders, Putin said the West was plotting to destroy his country, engaging in "nuclear blackmail" by allegedly discussing the potential use of nuclear weapons against Moscow, and accused the United States, the European Union and Britain of encouraging Ukraine to push military operations into Russia itself. 24 invasion, Putin explicitly raised the spectre of a nuclear conflict, approved a plan to annex a chunk of Ukraine the size of Hungary, and called up 300,000 reservists. In the biggest escalation of the Ukraine war since Moscow's Feb. ![]() These little nukes were, fortunately, never used.LONDON, Sept 21 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered Russia's first mobilisation since World War Two and backed a plan to annex swathes of Ukraine, warning the West he was not bluffing when he said he'd be ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia. According to Rawnsley and Brown, "These "small" weapons, many of them more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, would have obliterated any battlefield and irradiated much of the surrounding area.” The troops were trained to parachute or SCUBA dive behind enemy lines with their little nukes, to using them to take out strategic installations or render vast tracts of land uninhabitable. “Soldiers from elite Army engineer and Special Forces units, as well as Navy SEALs and select Marines, trained to use the bombs, known as "backpack nukes," on battlefronts from Eastern Europe to Korea to Iran," they write. The plan was to build something a little smaller than the devastating bombs that had been designed after the end of the Second World War.Īdam Rawnsley and David Brown chronicle in a sprawling feature the stories of the special forces troops. special forces started packing miniature nuclear bombs, devices known as the B-54 Special Atomic Demoliniton Munition (SADM), which they could carry in a backpack. To fill in the gap in military options between a full nuclear assault and engaging in a lopsided war, says Foreign Policy, U.S. In the event that communist forces launched a limited, non-nuclear attack, the president would have to choose between defeat at the hands of a superior conventional force or a staggeringly disproportionate (and potentially suicidal) strategic nuclear exchange that would kill hundreds of millions of people. Though massive retaliation was economical, it allowed the United States almost no flexibility in how it responded to enemy aggression. To balance the scales, the United States wielded the will, or at least the bluster, to threaten mass nuclear retribution for any militaristic slight, says Foreign Policy: In the wake of World War II, and throughout the Cold War, the United States and its NATO allies were severely outmanned and outgunned compared to the Soviets and their allies. ![]() ![]() Simulation- Players start from the bottom and race to earn money, unlock cars and courses, buy and sell cars, upgrade parts while competing in various championships Product Detail Console PLAYSTATION®2 Release Date Genre Racing Publisher/Developer Sony Interactive Entertainment / Polyphony Digital Inc. Suddenly, we can see an amazing amount of structure! There are clearly meaningful patterns at nearly every location, ranging from the geographic variations in the mountainous West, to the densely spaced urban centers in New England, and the many towns stretched out along roadsides in the midwest (especially those leading to Denver, the hot spot towards the right of the Rocky Mountains).Ĭlearly, we can now see much more of what's going on in this dataset, thanks to the logarithmic mapping. A logarithmic mapping is often a good choice: Because the data are clearly distributed so non-uniformly, let's instead try a nonlinear mapping from population counts into the colormap. Thus this version of the map conveys very little information as well. The problem is that of the available intensity scale in this gray colormap, nearly all pixels are colored the same low-end gray value, with only a few urban areas using any other colors. Again, that's not much information to be getting out out of 300 million datapoints! But mainly what the above plot indicates is that population in the USA is extremely non-uniformly distributed, with hotspots in a few regions, and nearly all other pixels having much, much lower (but nonzero) values. (In datashader images, the background color is shown for pixels that have no data at all, using the alpha channel of a PNG image, while the colormap range is shown for pixels that do have data.) Some additional population centers are now visible, at least on some monitors. The above plot reveals at least that data has been measured only within the political boundaries of the continental United States, and also that many areas in the West are so poorly populated that many pixels contained not even a single person. To load the dataframe, you'll need to install fastparquet and python-snappy. See Spacial indexing for more information. This particular Parquet file was stored with the datapoints ordered to allow fast spatial queries, and we can make use of that ordering if we instantiate a SpatialPointsFrame (a type of Dask dataframe) instead of the regular Dask dataframe. The census data has been saved in a Parquet-format file, which can be loaded into a columnar data structure like a Pandas or Dask dataframe. From inside the datashader examples directory, run: DS_DATASET=census panel serve -show dashboard.ipynb Load data and set up ¶ NOTE: This dataset is also explorable through the Datashader example dashboard. ![]() Here we will show how to run novel analyses focusing on whatever aspects of the data that you select yourself, rendered dynamically as requested using the Datashader library. (To protect privacy, the precise locations have been randomized at the census block level, so that the racial category can only be determined to within a rough geographic precision.) The Cooper Center website delivers pre-rendered tiles, which are fast to view but limited to the specific plotting choices they made. Each dot in this map corresponds to a specific person counted in the census, located approximately at their residence. Here we'll focus on the subset of the data selected by the Cooper Center, who produced a map of the population density and the racial makeup of the USA. on Sunday. The 2010 Census collected a variety of demographic information for all the more than 300 million people in the USA.
